RM Sotheby’s is looking to shift a record-holding Citroen DS3 WRC, plus one more

Two of Sébastien Loeb’s title-winning rally cars are up for sale. Rally fans with exceptionally deep pockets will be delighted to hear both the 2011 Citroen DS3 WRC and 2017 Peugeot 3008 DKR have been listed by RM Sotheby’s auction house.

The 2011 Citroen DS3 WRC has a phenomenal history. One of just 13 works-prepped DS3 WRCs constructed between 2011-2016, it’s achieved 11 World Rally Championship victories, 16 podiums and 80 stage wins – a record number for any WRC chassis.

Loeb secured eight of those 11 WRC successes in this DS3 with co-driver Daniel Elena. That even includes the 2012 Monte Carlo win – his ninth WRC title, making Loeb the most successful rally driver to date. Loeb and Elena went on to win in 2013, too – but of course they did.

This DS3 WRC has a transversely mounted four-cylinder engine, a six-speed ‘box and weighs only 1,200kg. Despite that neat package it generates a pokey 296bhp and explains why this particular model only conceded five defeats across 25 WRC challenges in the 2011-2012 season.

The 2017 Peugeot 3008 DKR has similar rally provenance. One of five 3008 DKRs to be entered by the Peugeot Sport team in the 2017 Dakar Rally, chassis 22 (the car on offer here) was driven to the third place on the podium by Cyril Despres, also known for his five-time Dakar motorcycle success.

Both Stephane Peterhansel – record-holding Dakar winner – and Loeb were in two of the other five examples that year. However, Loeb would go on to take this very car to third place in the 2019 Dakar Rally, with a newly strengthened chassis coupled to a 3.0-litre twin-turbo diesel V6 that chucked out 335bhp and generating 816 NM of torque.

While both cars are being offered without reserve, they’re expected to fetch as much as €650,000 and €750,000 respectively. Worth it?
