Futuristic prototype shows that Alpine really is serious about hydrogen power

Remember when Alpine CEO Laurent Rossi told TG that the firm was seriously looking into hydrogen-powered race cars, with possible plans to run one in the 24 Hours of Le Mans or to take a Nürburgring record? Well, this might just be the first step of that plan…

Internet, say hello to the Alpenglow concept. Named after “the reddish glow over the mountains just before sunrise”, Alpine wants this mad, futuristic racecar thing to offer a glimpse into the future of both its road and race cars. 

“Alpenglow’s mighty and lavish design hints at what Alpine cars will be like tomorrow,” says Rossi. “And at our vision for motor sports moving forward. With hydrogen technology on board, we are strengthening our pledge to bring about a future where emissions are clean and driving pleasure as real as ever.”

It was the potential hydrogen powertrain that apparently shaped the Alpenglow concept, with two storage tanks flanking the driver in a completely transparent cockpit. The large and active rear wing is transparent for some reason too, with Alpine saying the design was also inspired by “natural elements and states – such as fire, water, ice, wind and steam”. Riiight... Oh, and what we're not provided with is any technical info whatsoever. 

Still, it looks mega and we’re fans of the updated take on Alpine’s classic quad light signature up front. Also, does anyone else think that this could be more than a glimpse at Alpine’s 2024 LMDh endurance racer for Le Mans? That we could get on board with…
