Some art speaks for itself, leaving you speechless. Such is the case with the new Pagani Utopia Roadster, a V12-powered, manual-gearbox masterpiece that embodies the essence of open-air motoring perfection.
Pagani has always excelled at merging art and engineering, following in the footsteps of Horacio Pagani’s idol, Leonardo da Vinci. The new carbon-red roadster, with its AMG V12, doesn’t require pages of explanation. It's simply magnificent.
The Utopia was designed concurrently as a hard-top and a Roadster, making this version essentially a carbon (fibre) copy of the Coupe. The monocoque, suspension, and brakes remain unchanged, resulting in a featherlight dry weight of just 1,280 kg. In an era where the average performance car tips the scales at well over 2,000 kg, this is nothing short of miraculous.
You might notice a hard-top on this car. Indeed, the Utopia Roadster is three cars in one: a hard-top with a transparent panel, a storable soft-top, and the pure open-air experience we all crave. This flexibility allows you to transform your 1,280 kg marvel into a speedy open-air theatre, propelled by the same 6.0-litre Merc-AMG V12 found in the Coupe.
Under the bonnet, you’ll find a pair of turbos boosting the V12 to a formidable 640 kW at 6,000 rpm and 1,100 Nm of torque between 2,800 rpm and 5,900 rpm. Power is delivered to the rear wheels via a choice of a seven-speed Xtrac automated manual or a true seven-speed manual gearbox, propelling the Roadster to a top speed of 350 km/h. However, the real allure lies in the symphony of the AMG V12 echoing through mountain passes, an experience both soothing and exhilarating.
Thanks to the carbon-titanium monocoque, the Roadster maintains the Coupe’s sleek lines. Pagani’s meticulous design channels airflow around the car, ensuring optimal aerodynamics and stability.
Inside, the Utopia Roadster is a haven of handcrafted excellence. There are no giant touchscreens here, just elegant dials, a gear lever, swathes of carbon fibre and leather, and a substantial steering wheel. It's a tactile, analogue delight that feels very, very good.
A special mention goes to the Pirelli ‘Cyber Tyre’, each fitted with sensors that relay information to the stability control systems, ensuring the Roadster handles as impeccably as it looks.
As you might expect, exclusivity comes at a price. Pagani will build only 130 Utopia Roadsters, each starting at €3.1 million, excluding taxes. The myriad of colour and upholstery options ensures no two Utopia Roadsters will be identical.
The Pagani Utopia Roadster is more than just a car; it’s a piece of art, a statement of engineering prowess, and a testament to the thrill of driving. With its lightweight design, immense power, and breathtaking aesthetics, it’s a vehicle that captures the imagination and delivers an unparalleled motoring experience.
