Here we have the most dynamic Maybach ever, wrapped in the shell of the iconic SL. Dubbed the Mercedes-Maybach SL ‘Monogram Series,’ it’s an intriguing blend of luxury and performance—although if the standard SL was grappling with an identity crisis, this model certainly won’t simplify things.
This is the first time the prestigious Maybach badge graces Mercedes-Benz’s legendary SL line, which, as of 2024, is now built on an AMG platform. So, what you’re getting is the full spectrum of Mercedes engineering distilled into one very unique package.
And yes, it’s got the power to back it up. Based on the SL63, it’s powered by the familiar 4.0-liter biturbo V8, churning out a robust 430 kW and 800 Nm of torque. That’s all linked to a nine-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive, ensuring it can deliver a suitably refined drive.
Oddly enough, it’s a tad slower than the AMG version it’s based on—100 km/h takes 4.1 seconds compared to the SL63’s 3.6 seconds—but sheer speed isn’t the main attraction here. This Maybach SL is designed for a more relaxed drive, featuring a “noise-optimized” exhaust (which is a fancy way of saying it’s quieter), a comfort-focused adaptive suspension setup, softer engine mounts, and an “extensive insulation and absorption package” to ensure every journey is as smooth as silk.
But let’s be honest, the real draw here is the sheer Maybach-ness of it all. The Monogram Series is available in two distinct styles: the striking two-tone metallic black over red, known as ‘Red Ambience,’ or the equally refined ‘White Ambience,’ featuring a black bonnet with a white body.
The bonnet, of course, gets the royal treatment—adorned with a repeating Maybach monogram under a layer of lacquer, while the chrome-plated and illuminated radiator grille adds to the sense of occasion. Rose gold accents, redesigned front and rear skirts, a new rear diffuser, and 21-inch forged alloys complete the look.
Inside, you’re stepping into a realm of absolute luxury. The cabin is draped in ‘sustainably tanned’ white Nappa leather, with chrome trim and stainless-steel pedals and door sills. The adjustable touchscreen display is still front and center, so you can expect all the tech you need to complement the tactile luxury around you.
“The Mercedes-Maybach SL Monogram Series adds a sporty two-seater to our model family for the ultimate open-air pleasure,” says Maybach’s head honcho, Daniel Lescow. “It combines a dynamic driving experience with everything that characterizes a Mercedes-Maybach.”
Character indeed. What we have here is a vehicle built on a Mercedes-AMG platform and powertrain, draped in Maybach’s ultra-luxurious styling, and wearing one of Mercedes-Benz’s most revered badges. It’s a car that’s part grand tourer, part luxury cruiser, and entirely captivating.
