Positioned as a direct rival to the Tesla Model Y, the Sealion 7 is one of six new BYD models, three EVs and three plug-in hybrids, expected to arrive in Europe by 2025.
Built on an updated e-Platform 3.0 EVO, the Sealion 7 initially comes in a dual-motor, four-wheel-drive configuration. With a top speed of 216 km/h and a 0-100 km/h time of just 4.5 seconds, it promises an engaging driving experience. While BYD hasn’t released specific power figures for Europe, the Hong Kong model boasts 523 bhp (390 kW), which is likely to be similar for European markets.
The Sealion 7 will feature BYD’s largest 82.5 kWh ‘Blade’ battery, delivering a claimed range of 550 km, offering competitive range in the segment. More configurations, including a single-motor version and other battery options, are expected post-launch.
Production of the Sealion 7 will eventually shift to BYD’s new plant in Hungary, opening in late 2025, allowing the brand to sidestep the hefty 17% EU tariff on Chinese-built EVs. This local production will be crucial as BYD aims to carve out a significant share of Europe’s electric SUV market.
