The second-generation BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe is here for 2025, and it’s bringing more firepower to the fight. Originally launched as the sleek four-door cousin to the standard 2 Series, the Gran Coupe rides on BMW’s front-wheel-drive platform, but this time around, it’s had a serious makeover. A fresh exterior, a tech-packed cabin, and uprated powertrains all contribute to a sharper, more enticing package.
At the heart of this beast lies a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, now with refined combustion geometry, a dual injection system, and some extra juice. The 228 sDrive and xDrive variants now produce a healthy 241 bhp (179 kW) and 400 Nm of torque, while the M235 xDrive takes it up a notch to 312 bhp (233 kW). Although torque drops slightly to 400 Nm from the previous model’s 450 Nm, the M235 still packs plenty of punch.
A major change for 2025 is the swap to a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, ditching the old eight-speed auto. With the optional M Sport Package, drivers get an ‘M Sport Boost’ feature, which primes the car for max acceleration with a simple one-second pull on the left paddle shifter. Perfect for those moments when you need that extra surge of speed.
Speaking of speed, the 228 xDrive will do 0-100 km/h in a brisk 5.8 seconds - 0.2 seconds quicker than before while the M235 xDrive clocks in at 4.7 seconds. Interestingly, despite the bump in horsepower, the M235 is just a hair slower than its 2024 counterpart, but we’re talking fractions here.
Size-wise, the 2025 2 Series Gran Coupe has stretched out a little, now 18 mm longer and 25 mm taller, though the width and wheelbase remain unchanged. Standard across the lineup is the M Sport styling, complete with larger air intakes beneath the signature kidney grille. A neat embossed '2' adorns the Hofmeister kink, and the rear is framed by sharp LED taillights. As for wheels, 18-inch alloys come as standard, but you can opt for snazzier 18 or 19-inch designs wrapped in all-season, summer, or performance tyres.
BMW’s M Adaptive Suspension is standard across the board, but if you prefer a more conventional setup, you can get it at no extra cost. Tweaks to the suspension include a 20 percent increase in caster offset, which should improve both handling and comfort a perfect balance for spirited driving and everyday use.
Step inside, and the updates continue. The 2025 Gran Coupe comes with BMW’s Curved Display running the latest BMW OS 9. You’ll also find a redesigned gear selector, a wireless charging pad, and a standard 12-speaker Harman/Kardon sound system. Leather-free perforated Veganza upholstery comes as standard, with newly designed heated sport seats. And for the first time, massaging front seats are an option because who doesn’t want a bit of luxury on the daily commute?
BMW will start production of the second-gen 2 Series Gran Coupe at their Leipzig plant later this year, with the 228 xDrive and M235 xDrive hitting showrooms next March. The entry-level 228 sDrive will follow a few months later, so keep your eyes peeled for these refreshed Bavarians.
