Audi discontinued its compact A4 sedan in gas form. In its place, a new Audi A5 sedan.

After three decades of leading Audi's compact executive car lineup, the iconic A4 has been retired in favor of the new A5 sedan. This shift marks a new chapter for Audi, as the A5 sedan (or liftback) takes the reins, catering to the world's discerning middle managers.

Why the change? Audi's strategy is simple: even-numbered models go electric, while odd-numbered ones continue to thrive on internal combustion engines. So, the A4 isn't truly dead; it's just morphing with the times.

Under the Hood

The new A5 boasts a sleek design, updated tech, and two lively petrol engines aimed at pleasing drivers across the budget spectrum. The base model features a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, delivering 268 horsepower to all four wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. The engine’s variable turbine geometry turbocharger enhances efficiency, though fuel economy figures are still forthcoming.

For those craving more power, the S5 steps up with a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6, producing 362 horsepower. This marks the first time Audi has paired this engine with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The S5's Quattro all-wheel-drive system includes a Quattro sport differential with torque vectoring, promising a thrilling drive.

Enhanced Driving Dynamics

Audi promises significant enhancements in suspension and steering for both the A5 and S5. Adaptive dampers are available, allowing drivers to customize their ride comfort.

Global Availability

In the U.S, the A5 and S5 will be offered exclusively as sedans. However, European markets will have access to the Avant wagon versions. Notably, there are no plans for coupe or convertible variants. The A5 is the first model to utilize Audi’s new Premium Platform Combustion architecture, which supports both front- and all-wheel drive, as well as traditional petrol and hybrid powertrains.

Design and Technology

The A5 has grown larger, though it retains a refined, if not quite as swoopy, profile compared to the previous A5 Sportback. A wide grille flanked by large vents dominates the front, while real tailpipes adorn the rear—something the last-generation Ford Focus might envy.

Cutting-edge LED daytime running lights illuminate the front, and second-generation OLEDs light up the rear, offering up to eight dynamic lighting options. In Europe, these are adjustable on the go, but U.S. regulations require adjustments to be made while stationary.

Interior Innovations

Inside, Audi focuses on four key design pillars. The 'human-centric' design ensures safety and comfort, while the 'Digital Stage' comprises two MMI infotainment displays delivering vital information to both driver and passenger. 'Material Driven Design' enhances the sense of space and comfort, and 'Visual Clarity' ensures an intuitive layout.

The extended wheelbase offers more interior space, with ample headroom even in the rear. U.S. models come standard with a panoramic sunroof, while higher trims feature a dimmable electrochromic roof.

Advanced Infotainment

The Digital Stage infotainment system features a slim, freestanding OLED MMI display, paired with an 11.9-inch virtual cockpit and a 14.5-inch MMI touch display. An optional 10.9-inch display is available for passengers. The head-up display, appearing for the first time, allows drivers to control vehicle and infotainment functions seamlessly. This advanced setup is shared with the Q6 E-Tron and is expected to be a staple in future models.

Luxurious Options

The A5 and S5 come loaded with optional features. The passenger screen lets the co-pilot navigate or stream content, with a special coating to prevent driver distraction. A Bang and Olufsen sound system, with speakers in the headrests, offers dual-zone audio, enabling passengers to enjoy music or films independently from the driver, who can focus on calls.

Continuing the Legacy

The new A5 carries forward the A4’s legacy, with upgraded features, impressive technology, and a refreshed identity. Audi's commitment to internal combustion engines ensures that drivers won't be rushed into electric vehicles just yet, providing reassurance for petrolheads worldwide.
