Subaru is making waves at the Goodwood Festival of Speed with a distinctive WRX variant dubbed Project Midnight, and it's unlike anything seen before. True to its name, this carbon fiber-clad machine sheds considerable weight for enhanced performance. Subaru Motorsports USA boasts that this is their quickest and fastest WRX race car to date.
Under the hood lies a 2.0-liter flat-four engine, derived from their rallycross expertise, now tuned to produce a staggering 670 horsepower and 680 Newton-meters of torque. The turbocharged and intercooled powerplant revs up to 9,500 rpm, ensuring all four wheels receive the power expected of a WRX. Nestled in a stripped-down chassis, the car tips the scales at 1,120 kilograms, nearly 450 kilograms lighter than a standard WRX.
The aerodynamically optimized carbon fiber body features aggressive styling cues, including winglets, a substantial front spoiler, and widened wheel arches, giving it a menacing widebody stance. The rear wing, a modified version of Subaru USA's rally car design, complements the bespoke suspension setup tailored for tarmac performance, with 18-inch wheels wrapped in slick tires for optimal grip.
Inspired by Subaru's 2020 Gymkhana video with Travis Pastrana, Project Midnight retains rallycross roots but is finely tuned for ground performance. Piloted by rallycross champion and ex-F1 driver Scott Speed, Subaru aims to conquer Goodwood's hill climb and pursue further records in the future.
Scott Speed shared his excitement, "Subaru Motorsports USA and Vermont SportsCar have created a true beast. It's got rallycross DNA but feels uniquely poised with its wider stance and exceptional grip—a thrilling blend of rallycross prowess and sports car finesse."
Project Midnight will debut in person at Goodwood on July 11, marking a milestone in Subaru's performance evolution.
