The 718, Boxster and Macan are the first victims

That gnawing sense of dread you've been feeling lately? Sure, it might stem from the widening political chasms and an economy spiraling out of control. But more likely, it's the gut-wrenching news that Porsche is set to retire the internal-combustion 718 platform in 2025. It's time to drop everything and sprint to your nearest dealership to snag a new 718, because according to fresh intel from Germany, this might just be your last chance.

Porsche's production chief, Albrecht Reimold, revealed in an interview with Automobilwoche that production of the beloved internal-combustion twins will cease by mid-2025. This decision isn't due to sluggish sales but to clear the decks for their electric successors.

The all-electric 718s are expected to come in both coupe and convertible versions, mirroring the petrol-powered variants. Reimold assured fans that the exhilarating driving experience of the 718 will remain intact, and if our encounter with the 800 kW (1,073 hp) 718 Cayman GT4 ePerformance race car is any indication, he's spot on.

Due to stringent new cybersecurity regulations that recently came into force in the EU, Porsche has already discontinued the combustion 718 platform alongside the gasoline-powered Macan SUV there. Reimold cited limited availability of parts for the gasoline versions and a strategic shift towards electrification as key factors in the decision to phase out the internal-combustion Macan.

Details on the EV 718 remain scarce, but the new model has some significant shoes to fill. We're eagerly anticipating its arrival around mid-2025. Until then, we'll be chasing away our blues with the soul-stirring scream of a 7,800 rpm redline.
