The lineup of Gazoo Racing may be expanded.

Fans were worried that the new administration would halt the Gazoo Racing range after Akio Toyoda resigned as Toyota's CEO at the start of the year. Some believed sports cars would be put on the back burner after the Japanese automaker decided to invest heavily in EVs to catch up with competitors. Thank goodness, it won't happen. The GR lineup could potentially expand, according to recently hired CEO and President Koji Sato.

The head of Toyota stated, "The Gazoo brand will be recognized for the future -- and maybe we can even speed it up," in an interview with the British magazine Autocar. He continued by stating that Akio Toyoda, the current chairman of the company, "has a lot more time to develop cars" for the Gazoo Racing subsidiary, which he established back in 2007.

Naturally, he didn't elaborate on the potential successors to the GR Yaris, GR Corolla, GR 86, and GR Supra. The GR Super Sport was last referenced by Toyota in September 2021, so it has been a while since we've heard anything new about it. The decision to bring the electric machine with more than 1,000 horsepower into production was still pending at that time. Also anxiously awaiting is the GRMN Supra, which despite years of rumors, has yet to materialize.

The vehicle seen here is a genuine Toyota concept automobile. Known as the "Sports EV," it was unveiled as a two-seater roadster towards the end of 2021. It didn't take long for folks to surmise that the "mid-ship run-about 2-seater" is the MR2 of the EV world. The intriguing idea, which was shown on the same day as the electric Lexus LFA successor, suggests Toyota may spice up its range in the age of zero emissions.

If the Sports EV is ever put into production, it will compete against the newly introduced MG Cyberster and the next-generation Porsche Boxster/Cayman, which will only be available as electric vehicles starting in 2025. Alpine will introduce the all-electric A110 replacement it co-developed with Lotus a year later.
