The rear-wheel-drive Air Pure still packs a powerful punch.

The new rear-wheel-drive Pure has been introduced, completing the Lucid Air lineup. The most affordable model of Lucid's attractive electric car, the single-motor Pure, is already available for order, with prices starting at R1.9 million.

In comparison, the Air Pure RWD costs R200 000 less than its dual-motor version and R360 000 less than the Air Touring, which is the next level up. Although, to be fair, the Air Pure also has one third as much power, it costs one third as much as the 1,234hp Air Sapphire.

Mind you, the RWD Air Pure is nothing to laugh at. With 430 horsepower and 550 Nm of torque, the basic edition of the Lucid can go from 0 to 100 kph in 4.4 seconds. More significantly, the US test cycle estimates that the single-motor Air Pure has a 675 km driving range. That is superior than every product in its class, even the Tesla Model S.

An 88kWh battery pack, which can fast-charge at a maximum rate of 250kW (if you can find a fully working DC charger, anyhow), powers the Pure's lone rear-mounted engine. If you want to try to get the 675 km range, you'll need the 19-inch wheels that come standard with this variant. Better still, the Air Pure features an aluminum roof rather than a glass one with insufficient tint to keep the cabin cool.

The RWD Pure sounds like a fairly decent value if you don't want the full-on attack of one of Lucid's speedier Airs. Although it might be just one-third as powerful as a Sapphire, it is unquestionably not a third as wonderful of a vehicle.
