Long live the almighty V8

The name NASCAR instantly conjures images of V-8 engines roaring as metallic chariots thunder around superspeedways. While that tradition isn't vanishing anytime soon, NASCAR is also keeping an eye on the surging EV market. In a move that might seem contrary to NASCAR’s essence, the series unveiled its first EV prototype during the Chicago street race this past weekend.

This electric stock car boasts a distinctive silhouette, looking more like a beefed-up crossover than a typical NASCAR beast. It features an aggressive front, a robust stance, and a squared-off rear with a prominent wing. The body is crafted from a flax-based composite and sits on a modified NASCAR chassis, utilizing standard Cup Series components for steering, suspension, brakes, and wheels.

Beneath the skin, you'll find three six-phase electric motors—one up front and two at the rear—delivering power to all four Goodyear-clad wheels. The combined output is a staggering 969 kW (1,300 hp). These motors are linked to a 78.0 kWh liquid-cooled battery, complete with regenerative braking, making it "ideal for road courses and short oval tracks," according to NASCAR. While the powertrain may be silent, it's more than capable of shredding a set of tires.

This prototype was developed with input from NASCAR's key players—Ford, Chevrolet, and Toyota—and engineered by the same team behind the Next Gen car that debuted in 2022 and the Garage 56 car that competed at Le Mans in 2023. NASCAR hasn't confirmed if or when electric power will become a staple in its competitions, but this prototype certainly signals a shift on the horizon.
