SUVs are everywhere and AMG knows it. So, naturally, it’s building an electric one. Not just any electric SUV, though. This will be AMG’s first fully homegrown, no-holds-barred electric performance SUV, born right out of Affalterbach’s performance den. It’s not a regular Mercedes with an AMG badge slapped on; this beast is AMG from the ground up.
AMG is taking control of the entire vehicle architecture, a first for the brand, and basing it on their new AMG.EA platform, an all-electric platform tailored for high-performance. The SUV will be the second car off this setup, following an all-electric AMG GT four-door that’s expected to bring plenty of sideways fun.
Powering this brute will be cutting-edge axial-flux motors, tech that’s not only half the weight of traditional radial flux setups but also packs serious punch. If it sounds sci-fi, it’s because it’s pulled right from Mercedes’ Vision One-Eleven concept. These motors crank out 480 bhp (358 kW) and 800 Nm of torque each. With four of them, AMG could be casually looking at 960 bhp (716 kW) without breaking a sweat. That’s hypercar power. In an SUV.
And of course, there’ll be a battery, though solid-state tech might be a bit early here. Mercedes is collaborating with Factorial Energy for those, but they’re only due around 2030. In the meantime, AMG is prepping a high-performance battery unit to keep this SUV charging forward.
AMG’s winter testing is already underway. So, we’re on the brink of witnessing AMG’s first electric SUV - an off-roader promising AMG’s signature thrills, with a fully electrified twist. As AMG boss Michael Schiebe puts it, “AMG first, EV second.” This SUV isn’t just a new chapter for Mercedes; it’s a whole new script for AMG performance.
