Retains its title of "The fastest production car" around the ‘Ring

The Mercedes-AMG One has just redefined the meaning of "blistering speed" at the Nürburgring, smashing its own lap record by a full six seconds. Yes, the fastest production car to ever set a tyre on the legendary circuit... is still the fastest. But now, it’s even faster.

AMG's hybrid hypercar armed with 772 kW (that’s over 1,000 metric horses in old-school talk) has blitzed its 2022 lap of 6 minutes and 35.183 seconds with a mind-boggling new time of 6 minutes 29.090 seconds over the 20.8 km of unforgiving German tarmac. To put that in perspective, its previous record was already a solid seven seconds quicker than the Porsche 911 GT2 RS Manthey, but honestly, comparisons almost feel unnecessary here. The AMG One is in a league of its own.

Maro Engel, who piloted this beast both then and now, reflected on 2022's conditions: “Back then, some parts of the track were still damp, so we knew we had more to give." And boy, did they. This time, everything aligned ambient temps of 15°C and a track temp of 20°C giving Engel and the AMG One every advantage possible.

With everything primed, Engel hit the Nürburgring on 23rd September and unleashed the AMG One’s full potential. Of course, the hypercar’s F1-derived 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrid complete with four electric motors needed a bit of finesse. Like Lewis Hamilton on a hot lap, Engel had to balance the intricate mix of combustion and electric power, managing that tricksy energy recovery system with the odd bit of lift and coast to prep the drivetrain.

Then, Engel engaged Race Plus mode lowering the ride height, deploying maximum aero, full power, and just a dash of DRS. What followed can only be described as black magic. Every ounce of F1 wizardry that makes this car special came into play, from turbocharging and electric boosting to energy harvesting and hyper-efficient computations happening beneath the carbon-fibre skin.

“We’ve held the production car record for nearly two years now,” said AMG boss Michael Schiebe. “But at AMG, we’re always pushing boundaries. We knew there was more to give, and today, the AMG One has shown what’s truly possible.”

And with this latest achievement, the AMG One cements its status as the ultimate road-going machine. Faster. Sharper. Untouchable.
