Could this be the road legal GT2 car?

Mark your calendars, folks—August 16th is set to be a day of revelations at Monterey Car Week. Maserati is poised to unveil a new iteration of their MC20, and the rumour mill is spinning with excitement. Known for both the road-going MC20 and its racing counterpart, the GT2, Maserati is hinting at a fusion of these two beasts into what they're dubbing a "super sports car."

While Maserati remains tight-lipped, they've dropped a few intriguing hints. This new machine is described as an evolution of the MC20, merging the raw performance of the GT2 with the everyday usability and comfort of its road models. A tantalising teaser image showcases the MC20's familiar front end, adorned with the GT2's distinctive fender vents. A closer inspection hints at a carbon fibre front fascia and a lower spoiler, albeit less aggressive than the GT2's.

Speculation is rife that this new model could be a street-legal version of the GT2. If so, we might see the MC20's standard eight-speed automatic transmission swapped for a six-speed sequential gearbox. Upgraded suspension and aerodynamic enhancements are almost a given, but the real question lies under the bonnet. The standard Nettuno V6, which pumps out 463 kW in both the MC20 and the GT2, is potent but perhaps not quite "super sports car" territory. However, let's not forget the MCXtrema—a track-only variant that boasts a staggering 544 kW, which made its debut at last year's Monterey Car Week.

This new creation from Maserati will join the ranks of the MC20 Icona and the aforementioned MCXtrema on display at The Quail. For those keen to witness the grand unveiling, it all kicks off at precisely 9:12 AM Pacific time on August 16th. Buckle up, because this promises to be a thrilling ride into the future of Maserati's high-performance lineup.
