The Hybrid Off-Roader You Didn’t See Coming

The Lexus LX often synonymous with luxurious, go-anywhere capability just got a serious upgrade. For the first time in nearly 30 years, the flagship SUV has embraced hybrid power, introducing the LX 700h, now the crown jewel in the lineup. And let’s be clear: this is no hybrid designed to appease efficiency junkies with downsized engines. Lexus is still packing heat under the hood, with a twin-turbo 3.4-liter V6, now paired with a sophisticated parallel hybrid system.

At the heart of the LX 700h’s setup is a motor generator with a clutch, nestled between that brawny V6 and a 10-speed automatic gearbox. It’s a hybrid system with brains and brawn. Unlike previous Lexus hybrids, this one comes armed with both an alternator and a starter. Why? Because in the unlikely event that the hybrid system decides to take a nap, the LX 700h doesn’t. The SUV can still run on just the V6, thanks to the alternator keeping the 12V battery alive and the starter ready to spark the engine.

Even in off-grid scenarios, you’ve got traction control, low-range mode, and Lexus’s trick air suspension with Active Height Control still working. In short, the LX 700h is designed to keep moving, no matter what, and it's built to tackle the tough stuff, even with all its new hybrid tech onboard.

To make sure the LX 700h doesn’t lose any of its off-road cred, Lexus has gone the extra mile. The hybrid battery? It’s stashed under the rear floor in a waterproof compartment, so even with the electrics, this beast can wade through 70 cm of water without flinching. Whether you’re tackling muddy trails or rocky inclines, Lexus is making sure the hybrid components are well-protected from the elements.

And then there’s the new Overtrail trim, designed for those who like their luxury with a side of rugged adventure. It comes with front and rear differential locks alongside the center diff lock for maximum traction. Plus, depending on the market, you get a choice of chunky 265/70 R18 all-terrain tires or winter-ready 265/65 R18 mud-and-snow rubber. It's all set up for getting seriously dirty while keeping you comfortable inside.

Toyota’s premium arm is still keeping exact power figures for the 700h under wraps, but to give you a sense of the ballpark: the LX 600 pushes out 305 kW and 650 Nm of torque, so expect the 700h to land somewhere close. What we do know is that the Middle East-spec LX 700h tips the scales at a hefty 2,780 kg, with the base LX in the U.S. weighing in at 2,569 kg, rising to 2,697 kg for the fully loaded Ultra Luxury model.

Underneath the skin, Lexus has been busy making sure the 700h can handle the extra weight of the hybrid system. Stronger engine mounts, a more rigid radiator support, and a redesigned cross member have been added to support the powertrain. Even the spare tire got relocated to fit the hybrid gubbins under the rear floor, with the 12V auxiliary battery shifted to the side of the rear deck.

Inside, the LX 700h gets a tech update that brings it firmly into the modern era. The 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster is new, as are redesigned front seats. Wireless charging now comes with fast-charging support, and there’s a waterproof AC inverter stashed under the center console that delivers up to 2,400 watts of external power. Think of it as your personal mobile power station, with outlets at the back of the center console and on the deck perfect for off-grid adventures or as an emergency power source.

Then there’s Lexus’s 'Electro-Shiftmatic' system, making its debut on an off-road model. Originally introduced by Toyota for the Prius back in 2003, it’s essentially a shift-by-wire system but reimagined for a rugged luxury SUV. The shift knob itself is designed for tactile feedback, ensuring it feels as good as it works.

The Lexus LX 700h Overtrail proves that hybrid doesn’t have to mean soft. With its rugged credentials intact, plus an added layer of hybrid sophistication, it’s a vehicle that can tow the luxury line while still getting its tires muddy. The electrification of Lexus’s flagship SUV doesn’t just mark a step forward for the brand, but for luxury off-roaders in general. And as the automotive world moves deeper into the hybrid and EV era, it’s refreshing to see a car that brings real off-road capability to the hybrid table.

So, if you’ve been dreaming of an electrified adventure machine that doesn’t shy away from rough terrain, the LX 700h might just be your dream hybrid luxobarge. All the comfort of a Lexus with the grit to back it up.
