The new 992 GTS is the only hybrid model. According to Porsche, it improves the greatest sports automobile. Will it, though?

The Porsche 911 GTS can go from 0 to 100 kph in "less than three seconds" and is a "T-hybrid" (T for turbo). I apologize for starting off with such a callous and soulless song. But isn't it absurd? At 310 kph, the mid-range 911 is a powerful vehicle. A quarter-mile automobile in 10 seconds. How?

Let's discuss the new 992's hybrid features. For now, the GTS model is the only one with electricity, but do you really think Stuttgart would go to all this effort and then decide not to use it on the rest of the lineup?

Be aware that it is not a plug-in hybrid and that electricity is not sufficient for it to operate. The tiny 1.9kWh 27kg battery, which fits under the front bulkhead without taking up any boot space, is equivalent in size to a shoebox. It gives two electric motors dollops of power.

One produces 55 horsepower and 110 foot-pound boost and is housed in the eight-speed PDK transmission. The purpose of the other, a 14-bhp tiddler, is to prime the turbo. Yes, the single turbo. Porsche chose against using twin blowers in favor of a single, bigger turbo in the new GTS because of how quickly its integrated e-motor spools up. Lag is exiled. They can demonstrate it using graphs.

When the throttle was floored, the graphs in the previous GTS indicated that the maximum torque would not reach the rear wheels for two seconds. It is now a half-second delay. Oh my god.

We experienced the uncannily smooth rage of the power delivery, which comes with strange linearity, during a test ride in a passenger prototype. It simply does not stop dragging. Without any gaps or peaks in between, it's a vibrant fusion of barrel-chested turbo power and EV insta-punch. And quick enough to keep owners of full-fat supercars awake at night.

Without a wastegate, the turbo scavenges exhaust heat energy. Porsche's boffins claim that even Formula One cars aren't that smart. However, they say nothing about any significant increases in efficiency. They eventually admitted, when pressed, that the "T-hybrid" powertrain reduces pollutants by around 3g/km and that the fuel savings are so small, you wouldn't notice.

The electricity is included in order to eliminate turbo lag. Increase power. not broaden the scope.

It naturally acquires weight as well: 50 kg is added as opposed to the anticipated 150 kg penalty that a PHEV system would have contributed. Insiders at Porsche acknowledge their determination to keep the mass of the 911 GTS under 1,600 kg. As luck would have it, the stated curb weight is 1,595 kilograms. You can bet that "by the skin of your teeth" has a term in German.

The 400-volt electric architecture that Porsche's huge brains have unlocked has resulted in unforeseen benefits. The climate control is powered by the high-voltage system, meaning the 3.6-liter flat-six no longer requires a parasitic belt drive for the air conditioning compressor. This helps the engine rev more quickly and also results in a smaller, somewhat lighter powertrain than the one found in the previous bi-turbo, belted GTS. Consequently, the engine is located 110 mm lower in the car's interior. Thus, there is space for an additional lithium-ion ancillary battery on top.

Because of the strong electronic nervous system, adaptive suspension responds faster. It seems that you won't notice any differences in handling from day to night, but you will like that the nose-lifter lifts the front in just one second as opposed to five.

The GTS does not yell at bystanders, "Ich bin eine Hybrid," as you can see. Green brake calipers and emblems are absent, however a "T-hybrid" sticker for the door is available for purchase. Should be well-liked in Yorkshire.

How can I recognize one? The telltale feature is the front bumper's venetian blind shutters, which open and close to improve cooling or reduce drag as needed. There is no longer a separate daytime running light up front, therefore the intakes are bigger.

Oh, and Porsche claims that the brakes remain dry while the shutters are closed. Therefore, the new one stops sooner if you perform an emergency stop in a deluge. How much of that is German?

The automobile is designed to endure a full circuit of the Nürburgring, but it just says "ahh, to hell with it" and focuses on draining the battery as soon as possible when you twizzle the drive mode toggle to Sport Plus. With ordinary tires, the lap time for this mid-range Carrera is an almost unbelievable 7 minutes and 16 seconds.
