Lamborghini’s WEC and IMSA contender hits Imola for testing ahead of its race debut next year

The Lamborghini SC63 Le Mans racer, which was unveiled at the 2023 Goodwood Festival of Speed ahead of its race debut the following year, has now started its development program with a two-day test at Imola. The LMDh-class racer is slated for both the European WEC and the American ISMA racing series, where it will compete against opponents from Ferrari, BMW, Porsche, Peugeot, and Toyota in a crowded field.

The 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine that powers the SC63 was created especially for the project by Lamborghini Squadra Corse. The motor will operate at a 90-degree V-angle like the other V8s in the series for the first time because Lamborghini's motorsport division never had the opportunity to create an engine from scratch. In order to reduce the car's center of gravity, the turbochargers are placed low and on each side of the engine. An Xtrac-developed seven-speed gearbox transmits power to the wheels. In a recent test, factory drivers Mirko Bortolotti, Andrea Caldarelli, and Daniil Kvyat traveled over 900 miles over the course of two days at Imola. While the powerplant was initially the main emphasis, data collection, gearbox calibration, and the traction control system all received significant attention.

This engine is connected to a control hybrid module that includes an MGU from Bosch, a battery, and control units from Williams Advanced engineering in line with the LMDh (Le Mans Daytona Hybrid) class regulations. Although its total system power will be substantially higher, peak power output to the wheels is restricted to 671bhp, just like all of its LMDh competitors.

In contrast to Porsche, a competitor company of the VW Group, who worked with Multimatic to provide the car's chassis, Lamborghini Squadra Corse chose to work with Ligier. This implies that the two racers will be considerably different from one another as they have different chassis and combustion engine options.

The SC63 was created by the company's own Centro Stile division and features an angular, futuristic-looking body as well as Lamborghini's characteristic y-shaped running lights. To make the frontal area of the car as short as possible, the cockpit is extremely tiny, just like in many of its racing predecessors, and a big stacked rear wing is located at the back. The design has vents modeled after those on the Lamborghini Countach and combines cooling for eight different radiators.

The Lamborghini Revuelto is the first of the brand's upcoming hybrid road vehicle models; it competes in this class of endurance racing. Manufacturers are lining up to participate in the action because the connection between race and road vehicles in the LMDh class is so evident and strong, which is excellent news for enthusiasts of endurance racing.
