A halo Ferrari pops up every ten years, so we’re due another one very soon…

This just in: a company that specialises in making really fast, really technical supercars has confirmed another really fast, really technical supercar will be along soon. Shocked, right?

Speaking to TopGear.com at the launch of the new ‘e-building’ in Maranello – where the upcoming electric Ferrari will be built – Ferrari vice chairman (and son of Enzo) Piero Ferrari confirmed the successor to the game-changing LaFerrari is coming.

“Every ten years, we have one,” he said, pointing to the flagship Ferrari hypecar bloodline’s frequency. “Something will come. I know what it is…” he added. Obviously, he wouldn’t share exactly what it is, but whatever it is has to come along soon.

The Ferrari Enzo landed in 2002. The V12-engined, hybrid LaFerrari came along 11 years later in 2013, itching for a fight with the Porsche 918 Spyder and McLaren P1. You’ll note it’s now 2024, which feels like exactly the right anniversary to unleash the next one.

Ferrari has always insisted these halo hypercars come along to showcase a new technological development: the F50’s was a proper F1-derived V12 as a stressed member; the Enzo’s was a super-quick (for the time) paddleshift transmission and actual downforce learned through Ferrari’s domination of F1.

LaFerrari? F1-derived hybrid tech used not for efficiency, but to bolster that seismic naturally aspirated V12. So what will the next one utilise? Rumours abound that Ferrari will ditch the V12 in favour of its V6 hybrid, a version of which currently does rather startling service in the 296 GTB.

And in a couple of Le Mans-winning sports prototypes. Because that same 3.0-litre V6 – albeit in a different tune – helped Ferrari win both the 2023 and 2024 Le Mans 24hr races. Which feels like the right kind of motorsport provenance for a halo Ferrari road car (because it’s not like there’s anything to shout about with the F1 team of late). The 499P’s engine was also a stressed member… just like the F50’s.

Considering the 296 GTB gets over 800 horses, and the V8-powered SF90 just under 1,000bhp, the next halo car will have to punch out something very special indeed. Naturally there’ll be lots of special aero at play, too, judging by bewinged prototypes seen testing near the Fiorano proving ground…

What on earth will this company that makes really fast supercars do next? An electric supercar? Oh, wait…
