And get this—the driver had never even been there before

While Koenigsegg still has its sights set on a top-speed run with the Jesko Absolut, the Swedish hypercar maker is busy smashing other records in the meantime. The latest? The track-focused Jesko Attack just became the fastest production car to ever lap the iconic Laguna Seca. On August 18, it tore through the legendary 3.5-kilometre course in just 1 minute and 24.86 seconds.

Here’s the kicker—this was not only the Jesko Attack’s debut at Laguna Seca, but also the first time Koenigsegg development test driver Markus Lundh had ever set foot on the 66-year-old Californian circuit. Despite the fresh terrain for both car and driver, the Jesko Attack edged out the previous record-holder, the Czinger 21C, by a mere 0.58 seconds. It’s worth noting that the Czinger 21C recently set its own record at Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, beating the Hennessey Venom F5 by 0.2 seconds.

The onboard footage is pure adrenaline, showing Markus Lundh taking on the notoriously tricky Laguna Seca Raceway, including the infamous Corkscrew. The soundtrack? Courtesy of a twin-turbo 5.0-litre V8 that churns out a staggering 1280 HP. Run it on E85, and that power figure jumps to a mind-boggling 1600 HP. Koenigsegg quotes a colossal 1,500 Nm of torque, enough to move mountains.

This isn’t the first time the Jesko Attack has shattered records. Back in late 2023, Koenigsegg’s factory test driver Niklas Lilja lapped Sweden’s Gotland Ring in 2 minutes and 56.97 seconds, slicing nearly eight seconds off the previous record held by a Porsche 911 GT3 RS MR.

You can easily spot the Attack version of the Jesko thanks to its enormous rear wing, whereas the Absolut variant trades that for a pair of fins to optimize high-speed aerodynamics. Speaking of speed, the Absolut recently set a record by blasting from 0 to 400 km/h and back to zero in just 27.83 seconds, shaving 1.33 seconds off the Rimac Nevera’s time. However, a new, more hardcore Nevera R, packing more power and shedding some weight, is gearing up to challenge those records.

Of course, the record everyone’s waiting for is top speed. Koenigsegg has done the maths and estimates the Jesko Absolut will easily breach the 483 km/h barrier. A recent chassis dyno test showed a theoretical 500 km/h before hitting the rev limiter in ninth gear, hinting that there’s even more speed left untapped.

While the uncorked Bugatti Chiron Super Sport hit 490.48 km/h, it only did so in one direction, which didn’t qualify for a Guinness World Record. Still, you can bet that Koenigsegg, Hennessey, and SSC are all gunning to eclipse that mark. Bugatti might be done chasing speed records, but with a top speed of 444 km/h, the sixteen-cylinder Tourbillon is far from slow.
