BMW and ONE partner to build prototype iX with Gemini battery, doubling range.

A company called Our Next Energy (ONE) and BMW have partnered on a plan to nestle ONE's Gemini battery into a BMW iX. This catapults the all-electric four-door SUV's range to 600 miles on a single charge, about doubling its factory figure and surely erasing range anxiety. The ONE-powered prototype BMW iX resulting from the signed agreement should be completed by the end of 2022.

Established in 2020 by Mujeeb Ijaz and based out of Novi, Michigan, ONE is an energy storage company aiming to create more sustainable energy storage technology while reducing environmental impact. Basically, ONE wants to pack twice as much energy into batteries to double the range of electric vehicles. This is obviously advantageous when it comes to real-world, long-distance towing, climbing, and traversing during inclement weather. ONE's solution focuses on battery performance and technology—storing more energy in less space—rather than plopping down more EV charging stations.

ONE's Gemini Dual-Chemistry (traction/long-range) battery—the one that is to power BMW's iX to demonstrate 600 miles of range—uses technology that results in 20 percent less lithium and 60 percent less graphite, while also minimizing nickel and cobalt use. ONE retrofitted a Tesla Model S with its ONE Gemini battery pack at the end of 2021 and achieved 752 miles on a single charge. ONE also makes an Aries battery system.

The Silicon Valley-based venture capital division of BMW, called BMW i Ventures, is an investor in ONE and recently led a $65 million funding round. ONE's focus on sustainability (after all, BMW calls the iX the most sustainably produced vehicle it's ever made), safety, and cost could be a huge win in the development and adoption of BEVs—and also for the BMW Group, specifically when it comes to addressing the challenging task of sustainably increasing the range electric vehicles can travel on a single charge.

Given that all goes well, BMW is prepared integrate ONE's battery technologies into future BEV models. On the flipside, ONE hopes the partnership with BMW helps validate to potential consumers its battery technologies and fabulous range potential.
