Ford has confirmed that its forthcoming 2026 Formula 1 partnership is as technical partner to Red Bull Powertrains, offering technical and financial support for the engine manufacturing program that will power both Red Bull and Alpha Tauri racers from the 2026 season. 

The partnership has been confirmed for at least four years, where Ford will offer its technical expertise in the development of both the combustion engine and electric motor technology. The partnership will also extend to the development of the battery cells, power control unit and analytics. 

The American brand has an illustrious history in F1, dominating the sport in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. Over the years, it has become the third most successful engine supplier in F1 history, with a total of ten constructors’, and 13 drivers’ world championships. 

Its decision to return to Formula 1 is due to the recent rise in popularity, especially in the US, plus the new 2026 hybrid engine regulations and their closer connection to hybrid and sustainable fuel technology being developed for high performance road cars. It’s a move that many global car companies have also been eyeing up in recent months, including key rival GM with its highly publicised bid for a new entry in partnership with Andretti Racing. 

Unlike GM’s program, though, Ford’s partnership with an existing team has gathered more cohesive support from F1 and the FIA. 

 “The news today that Ford is coming to Formula 1 from 2026 is great for the sport and we are excited to see them join the incredible automotive partners already in Formula 1”, said Stefano Domenicali, President, and CEO of Formula 1. 

Ford Motor Company’s executive chair and great-grandson of the Ford’s founder, Bill Ford said “this is the start of a thrilling new chapter in Ford’s motorsports story that began when my great-grandfather won a race that helped launch our company”.

This return to F1 will see Ford Performance enter yet another top-draw racing series, with Mustangs to compete in the 2024 WEC GT3 class, new-era NASCAR championship and new generation of Australian Supercars. Ford is also back as a full works partner with M Sport in the World Rally Championship.
