Velocity Modern Classics, restorer and modifier of old American motors, has unveiled its latest project focusing on the Ford F-100. And you’re right, it is rather lovely.
Principally because it’s quite clean for a late Sixties/early Seventies American pickup, but also mostly because it’s been completely overhauled from the ground up. Indeed if you’re anything like us and harbour unnatural thoughts about buying an old rotter and renovating it at ruinous expense, welcome, friend! Step inside, the water’s warm.
As is the engine. VMC has ripped out the F-100’s wheezy old V8 and installed a much more enthusiastic 5.0-litre Coyote V8, the same one Ford stuck inside the 2022 Mustang. That means 460bhp and 420lb ft of torque, mated here to a Ford ten-speed automatic gearbox driving the rear wheels.
Power then, won’t be an issue, ditto the noise thanks to a custom-built exhaust. VMC has overhauled the base, too: there’s a brand new mig-welded and rust-proofed complete chassis via Illnois-based Roadster Shop, allowing the fitment of Fox coilovers front and rear “for a comfortable ride”. Prepare thine arm for its hanging-nonchalantly-out-the-window tan. There are also 13in discs with four-pot calipers providing a welcome brake upgrade.
Ditto the exterior. It’s a standard F-100 but bears a few smart upgrades. Things like new LED headlights, 18in alloys, custom paint, chrome bumpers and new glass and weather seals. It’s all in the detail, see.
And in a new retro stereo with a Focal speaker system, modern climate control via Vintage Air, new carpets, a new bench seat, electric windows and a wood steering wheel. There’s a ‘Street Edition’ of this F-100 which adds two-way adjustable coilovers, even bigger brakes and bigger alloys, plus a few more exterior details and interior appointments like leather.
“There is such rich history behind these trucks,” said VMC boss Jeremy Hans, “and we’re excited to see them back on the road.” Especially when they’re this clean. As expected, each car will cost a significant amount - a result of VMC's years of experience, the sheer quantity of materials and 14-week turnaround. The 'Signature Edition' truck kicks off at $279,900, while the one pictured here - the 'Street Edition' - starts at a whisker under $340k.
