The MBUX Superscreen and a passenger display are available, and the powertrains remain the same, but it is bursting with modern technology.

When the outgoing W213 E-Class made its debut in 2016, it featured a wide range of technology. The sixth-generation W214 closely follows suit. The 2024 Mercedes-Benz E-Class blends a unique interior loaded with displays and cameras, up to five depending on selected options, with an evolutionary outward design and legacy engines.

Mercedes initially provides the E 350 and E 450 as its two trim levels for North America. It is just slightly larger and has a wheelbase that is half an inch longer. This corresponds to an inch and a half extra of legroom in the rear and elbow space that is almost as wide as the S-Class. Both trims employ an improved version of the 9-speed automatic transmission and are available with the 4MATIC AWD drivetrain. Depending on the model, you'll find the classic four-cylinder or inline-six engine under the hood. The main story here is what's going on inside; we'll talk more about the mechanics later.

Much of what we're about to say could be familiar to you already. Mercedes made the curious decision to reveal the interior of the new E-Class back in February, replete with images and a brief list of features. In case you forgot, whichever E-Class trim level you select, the MBUX Superscreen is fully functional. It has a stand-alone driver display and a large screen that merges into the center display, very similar to the typical configuration seen in the EQE. There are two different display options: Sporty, which is ostensibly designed for driving aficionados with plenty of red lights and a center tachometer.

A passenger screen is featured with the optional MBUX Premium Plus package. It is connected to sensors in the passenger seat and only turns on when someone is seated in it. In order to prevent any further distractions while driving, the screen is made to provide passengers complete visibility while obstructing it from the driver.

Up to five internal cameras for the E-Class were suggested earlier in relation to distractions. A single camera that watches the driver to make sure their eyes are on the road is the only one that is required. For sophisticated driver-assist systems, a stereo camera setup adds a second driver monitor to the instrument display, and the MBUX Interior Assistant function includes a gesture camera in the overhead control panel. Additionally, there are two RGB cameras: a dash cam and the aforementioned selfie camera. Yes, what Mercedes claims may be utilized for Zoom meetings while traveling is a genuine thing. or better yet, securely off the road parked.

Additionally, a stereoscopic 3D driver display is an optional feature. In essence, the left and right eyes perceive various pixels differently on the screen, creating a sensation of depth similar to those strange stereoscopic photographs you have to cross your eyes to view. The soft interior LED lights may also be made to match with the music playing via the Burmester sound system thanks to the optional Active Ambient Lighting function. So, yes, there is a lot going on.

The new E-Class sedan, according to Mercedes, is more about software than hardware. To make this claim real for you, the sedan is powered by a new unified computer system that, among other things, improves interoperability with third-party apps. Customers may download entertainment apps like the video game Angry Birds, video conferencing programs like Webex or Zoom, or the Vivaldi browser to do online searches upon startup. And sure, TikTok is a video site that you can use to watch humorous videos or submit wacky content for your fans. All of this is in addition to features that are specific to the car, such as navigation, performance, seat position, and mirrors.

Mercedes has improved its voice command system to make it easier for drivers to use all of the E-Class features. The phrase "Hey Mercedes" is no longer required to begin a command when there is only one passenger in the vehicle. The E-Class also employs a cutting-edge AI technology that will gradually learn driver routines and apply them automatically. Additionally, E-Class owners may use pre-installed routines or build new ones, including customized temperature settings, preferred lighting settings, and more.

One may forget this is a vehicle with all the technology inside. The E-Class maintains its recognizable cab-rearward form, but the gloss black panel linking the standard LED headlamps gives it an EQ touch. In the center is a somewhat bigger grille that is either rimmed in chrome or with optional LED running lights. Digital lights with a projection feature are an additional option, and in the back, stylish LED taillights with three-pointed star features. Wheel sizes range from 18 to 21 inches, flush door knobs are common, and flush door handles.

Underneath, The E-Class has an optional rear steering system that, at speeds under 60 kph, can spin the wheels up to 4.5 degrees. According to Mercedes, this is sufficient to reduce the turning radius of the sedan by over three feet. The rear wheels may swivel up to 2.5 degrees at greater speeds for improved performance, stability, and maneuverability. It comes with the optional Technology package, which also includes the continuously adjustable damping Airmatic air suspension system. In addition to maintaining the car's level, it lowers the E-Class by slightly over half an inch over 120 kph for increased economy and a lower center of gravity.

Under the hood, you'll find (almost) the same engines used for the outgoing E-Class. The E 350 still has a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, though it gains a small electric motor to become a mild hybrid. Power is rated at 255 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque, though an extra 20 hp is available with a boost function. The E 450's turbo I6 is still a mild hybrid system, though power is up to 375 hp. The six-pot generates 500 Nm of torque, and like the four-cylinder, a 20-hp boost is available. Mercedes-Benz doesn't have performance or efficiency ratings available yet, and for now, there is no plug-in hybrid trim in the States.
