The next big thing in EV Tech?

BMW is gearing up to redefine electric vehicle performance with its groundbreaking in-wheel electric motor technology. Imagine two electric motors cleverly integrated into one compact unit, small enough to be fitted at each corner of a car. This could well be the next game-changer in the world of EVs.

Developed in collaboration with Munich-based tech innovators DeepDrive, this new system boasts dual rotors working in unison to enhance efficiency and range. The brilliance of this design lies in its ability to move both the internal and external rotors simultaneously, unlike conventional motors which only move one. The result? Superior performance and improved economy—at least, that's the claim.

This compact motor is designed to be installed in-wheel, meaning a car could potentially have four of these powerhouses delivering drive directly to each wheel. It's a transformative concept, though it might be a bit overkill for something like a Reliant Robin.

Early simulation tests are promising, showing that DeepDrive's tech not only works with BMW's current systems but also surpasses them in certain areas. It's a bit of a twist considering DeepDrive's relatively modest scale compared to the might of BMW’s engineering department.

BMW is now prepping a fleet of production cars equipped with these in-wheel motors for further testing. If successful, this could revolutionize the electric vehicle landscape, assuming Hyundai-Kia's ‘Uni Wheel’ doesn’t steal the spotlight first.

This partnership and the innovative technology it brings underscore BMW's commitment to pushing the boundaries of what electric vehicles can achieve. It's an exciting time for EV enthusiasts, and if this tech lives up to its potential, it could make the future of driving cleaner, faster, and more efficient.
