We drove the four door M3 at the national ride and drive event in the Cape. More recently we also had the opportunity to try out the G82 series BMW M4 Competition.
As you can probably imagine the BMW M4 Competition is a pretty sought after test unit, which explains why we have not had the opportunity to get behind the wheel until just a few days ago. Either way, we are glad that we did so we could bring you this video review.
You probably already know the main stats on the newest M4, but we will run through some of them here. The only version on sale locally, for now, is the M4 Competition. That means it comes with twin-turbocharged 3,0-litre inline six that delivers 375 kW and 650 N.m of torque. In some markets buyers can opt for a lower-powered M3/4 with 353 kW/550 N.m. That version of the engine can also be mated with a six-speed manual transmission.
All-wheel-drive on its way
As it stands local M car fans will have to make do with an eight-speed automatic that drives the rear wheels. In the not too distant future you will also be able to choose an AWD drivetrain (pricing on the xDrive versions can be found here). BMW claims the M3/4 can break the 100 km/h mark in 3,9 seconds after take off, but independent testing locally has shown that figure to be a bit conservative with multiple runs in the sub-3,9 second region recorded.
