Introducing the Ariel Nomad 2, a recognizable yet revamped beast. With only the steering wheel, pedal box, and fuel cap carried over from the 2015 original, this iteration boasts a 65% stiffer chassis and 50% more suspension travel. Aerodynamic elements are seamlessly integrated, enhancing its rugged appeal. Notably, it no longer runs on a Honda engine. Instead, it now houses Ford’s 2.3-liter turbo from the Focus ST, offering 260hp in standard form and 305hp in an upgraded version.
Weighing around 850kg, the top-spec Nomad 2 has a power-to-weight ratio that rivals a 911 Turbo, promising 0-100km/h in just over 3.0 seconds and hitting 160km/h in about 7.5 seconds. The gearbox is a six-speed manual from the ST, with the option of a rally-style hydraulic handbrake for those keen on extreme maneuvers.
The Nomad 2's chassis features thicker tubes, and extensive CAD and CFD analysis have improved torsional rigidity and suspension geometry, reducing the uncontrolled pitch, dive, and wallow of the original. Suspension options range from standard K-tec to top-tier Ohlins.
Inside, the Nomad 2 is more user-friendly. The dashboard, largely inspired by the Atom 4, offers better integration and easier operation, while the electrics have been overhauled to a single power distribution module, eliminating the need for separate fuses or relays. The windscreen is more upright and closer, with more conventional wipers.
Prices will increase by around 10%, starting at approximately £60,000. The Nomad 2 promises greater capability and ease of driving while retaining its adventurous spirit. We’re eager to get behind the wheel. Are you?
