Hydrogen power isn’t just a niche science experiment anymore, nit’s the future, according to Alpine. Much like Toyota, Alpine believes it can keep the combustion engine alive by running it on hydrogen, and they’ve taken this vision to a whole new level with their Alpenglow Hy6 concept. Where Toyota’s playing around with three-cylinder hot hatches like the GR Yaris and GR Corolla, Renault’s performance division started with a four-cylinder. Now, they’ve upped the ante with a stunning V6.
The Alpenglow Hy6 is the next evolution from the Hy4 prototype we saw not long ago. That earlier car was a proof-of-concept, a prototype born from the static 2022 Alpenglow. But forget the 2.0-litre, turbocharged engine from before; that 250 kW unit has made way for something far more aggressive, a 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6, cranking out an immense 544 kW (730 BHP) and 770 Nm of torque, all fed straight to the rear wheels.
Renault’s performance arm has engineered this six-cylinder engine to run on hydrogen, paired with a sequential transmission. The V6 revs up to an insane 9,000 rpm and drinks hydrogen from three separate tanks, two mounted in the side pods and a third just behind the cockpit. For safety, these tanks are housed in ventilated compartments and completely isolated from the cabin, making sure hydrogen stays where it should: powering this beast to incredible speeds.
This all-new V6 wasn’t cobbled together overnight either, it took Alpine two years to develop. Built with an aluminium block and a dry sump, this mid-mounted engine churns out a staggering 156 kW per litre, and sits inside an LMP3-grade carbon chassis. The results? This supercar can blast beyond 330 km/h, all while emitting nothing but water vapour, thanks to its Inconel exhaust system built into the taillights. Zero emissions, maximum speed.
While Alpine has confirmed plans to bring a supercar to production, it’s still unclear whether that car will carry a hydrogen-powered combustion engine or go fully electric. Either way, the French marque is gearing up for a big future, including its official debut in the United States in a couple of years.
The Alpenglow Hy6 will take centre stage at the 2024 Paris Motor Show, alongside Alpine’s electric A290 hot hatch, the performance variant of the upcoming Renault 5. The A390 concept SUV is also making an appearance, ready for production next year as the company’s first-ever SUV. And let’s not forget the limited-edition A110 R Ultime, Alpine’s most expensive model to date, on display for the world to see.
Hydrogen power, supercar speeds, and a future packed with performance, Alpine’s latest innovation is a game-changer for those who crave speed but care about the environment.
