Alpina has taken its wrenches and wizardry to BMW’s behemoth once again, giving us the new ‘Manufaktur’ XB7—a beast of an SUV that now sports an even more eye-catching hue and some serious muscle to match.
Let’s be honest, Alpina’s magic works best on svelte estates like the B3 and B5 Tourings, but since 2020, the XB7 has become a surprising hit, with 2,880 of these bruisers rolling off the line. So, here we are, with the latest iteration of the XB7, now draped in a shade that could make the Hulk himself envious and packing the power to back it up.
Under the bonnet, Alpina has taken the 4.4-litre biturbo V8 from BMW’s M60i and dialed it up to 457 kW (613 PS) and a thumping 800 Nm of torque. All that grunt is sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic, allowing this two-and-a-half-tonne giant to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.2 seconds, and hit 200 km/h in a mere 14.9 seconds. Keep your foot planted, and it’ll eventually top out at 290 km/h. That’s supercar pace in an SUV that could double as a small house.
The XB7 rides on air suspension that’s been reworked by Alpina, giving it the ability to hunker down by up to 40 mm, depending on your chosen drive mode. The chassis has been beefed up too, with reinforced torsion struts, dome-bulkhead struts, and rear axle bushings—all the geeky bits that keep this heavyweight in check when you inevitably push it beyond what physics should allow.
Of course, the real show-stoppers here are the 23-inch Alpina Classic forged wheels, a signature that somehow manages to make even this hulking SUV look refined. Behind those wheels, you’ll find upgraded brakes that are more than capable of reining in all that mass when needed.
The ‘Manufaktur’ XB7 is offered in a striking shade of green, alongside the classic Alpina blue, with other, less exciting colours available if you must. At the rear, a new diffuser caps off the Alpina-specific body kit, giving it just the right amount of aggression without tipping into gaudy territory.
Inside, Alpina has gone all out with the ‘Lavalina’ interior, stitching together 427 pieces of leather in a process that takes a painstaking 100 hours. It’s the most intricate leatherwork Alpina has ever done in its nearly 60 years of existence, and it shows. The cabin is a symphony of luxury, with every surface exuding quality and craftsmanship.
Since its debut in 2020, the XB7 has found around 550 homes in Europe alone, and with this new ‘Manufaktur’ edition, Alpina is aiming to continue that success. Prices start at €190,500, so it’s not exactly a bargain, but then again, you’re getting a lot of SUV for your money—both in terms of size and sheer presence.
