The all-new seventh-generation Volkswagen Transporter is here, boasting fresh styling tweaks alongside increased space, payload, and towing capacity. Plus, there’s an even broader spectrum of funky colours—an essential feature for any medium-sized work or recreational van.
The new Transporter offers three powertrain choices from the get-go: a turbo-diesel engine ranging from 81 to 125kW, a plug-in hybrid delivering 171kW, and an array of electric motors producing between 100 and 210kW. Expect an even smaller battery alternative to join the lineup soon.
Key features include an eight-speed automatic gearbox and front-wheel drive on most versions, with all-wheel drive available as an option. These enhancements mean the Transporter can now haul more weight—up to 2.8 tonnes (an increase of 300kg over its predecessor).
Externally, the boxy shape has grown by 146mm in length and 128mm in width, while still keeping its height under two metres to avoid those heart-stopping low bridge encounters. The redesigned light signatures at both ends and a choice of 17 to 19-inch alloys add to its friendly, comforting look.
Volkswagen continues to offer the Transporter in several body type variations, including the 'Kombi' (passenger transport), 'Panel Van' (for goods), and a nine-seat 'Caravelle'. You can further customise your van with different wheelbase lengths or higher roofs. No mention of a 23-window version, unfortunately, but there will be a retro-styled ‘Pan America’ for the artsy types.
Inside, you can customise to your heart’s content. Standard features include a 12-inch digital cluster and a 13-inch infotainment screen, along with a multifunction steering wheel for various tasks. The handbrake lever has been replaced with a switch, and a stop/start button has taken over from the conventional key.
Volkswagen has also implemented smart space-saving measures, adding extra cupholders and cubbyholes. There’s more room for additional USB ports with a total output of up to 230V, and the audio kit boasts up to 14 speakers. You might want to cancel those Kendrick Lamar tickets.
