Time to start booking those flights to Italy, no?

Fiat might have riffed on the original and stuck as closely to that classic recipe as possible when the nuovo 500 was released, but for those wanting the original flavour, a new company is offering a fresh take on a classic.

The Real Italian Car Company – a car company that's definitely real and working out of Italy – has detailed the range of Fiat’s 1950s icon it offers, including a fully bespoke build, restoring a family heirloom or even servicing your miniature classic.

The results, at least judging by these initial pictures, are quite something.

We’re told that “from the beautiful medieval town of Lucca”, the team select the most “honest” examples of the iconic city car and restore it according to the whims of each individual customer and yep, you're already booking those flight to Italy aren't you.

Everything from the chassis and body upwards appears to have been thoroughly overhauled and renovated, ditto the 500’s rear-mounted two-cylinder 500cc engine, suspension, brakes and electronics.

The company’s even roped in some of the mechanics who worked on the Fiat 500 back when it was new, while an Italian furniture designer is on hand to add those finishing touches.

A few of the cars it has already restored include the Fiat 500D, 500L and 500F, along with the Spiaggina beach buggy too, because why the heck not.

Here’s the point you normally sit back and ponder on how many hundreds of thousands each bespoke original 500 will cost. Well, we’re told prices start from just R200 000, naturally rising depending on how bespoke you want it.

So on a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being ‘I’d rather get the bus’ and 10 being ‘need it immediately’, how quickly are you researching ‘move to Tuscany, buy an old-new Fiat 500’?
