At the Chengdu Motor Show in China, the South Korean automaker unveiled the brand-new Kia EV5 small electric SUV. And as is customary for Kia, Hyundai, and Genesis, we won't learn more about the company's second zero-emission SUV until October, when the company will host its EV Day event.
We'll have to make do for the time being with an official photo gallery (included below) and a few design details that were mentioned in passing throughout the press release, such as the fact that the new EV5 has a mood lighting system with adjustable brightness and that users can select from a total of 64 colors, including 10 shades selected by Kia's lighting experts.
According to the manufacturer, when turned on, the mood lighting blends in with the vehicle's operating modes, dims in low light, and even informs the driver if the vehicle exceeds the posted speed limit.
With four color and five seat pattern options available, including two woven varieties and one fake leather version for the base model, Kia says that consumers will be able to customize the inside of the EV5 to the same levels of elegance and taste that they may pick for their own house.
The most recent electric SUV from the Korean manufacturer will come in a total of nine glossy hues (Snow White Pearl, Clear White, Starry Night Black, Magma Red, Ivory Silver, Frost Blue, Iceberg Green, Tide Blue, and Shale Grey) as well as a matte Ivory Silver.
According to Karim Habib, executive vice president and head of the Kia Global Design Center, "the Kia EV5 was created to redefine the compact SUV genre with a form shaped by Kia's unique design philosophy 'Opposites United.'"
To develop a comprehensive strategy for sustainable mobility, Kia's designers collaborated closely with their technical colleagues at every level. The EV5 achieves unprecedented levels of driving satisfaction and user experience while also setting new benchmarks for design, performance, and practicality.
According to the news release, the Kia EV5 offers seats for five people, "exceptional versatility, and outstanding comfort," and is marketed as a vehicle that has been built and manufactured to satisfy the demands of millennial families.
The EV5 concept vehicle's broad snout, solid hood, and three-dimensional "Signature Star Map Lighting" made up of LED daytime running lights are all present on the front of the SUV.
Additionally, the 82 kilowatt-hour battery will provide the electric compact SUV a driving range of up to 600 km, according to The Korean Car Blog.
With additional markets shortly to follow, the Kia EV5 will go on sale in China around the end of the year.
